Rob Uhorchuk Speaks on “Big Brother” Implications for Internet of Things to Florida Association of Corporate Counsel Members

March 17, 2017

Spicer Rudstrom attorney Robert J. Uhorchuk joined three other lawyers for a presentation to the Association of Corporate Counsel Central Florida Chapter this week. “The `Big Brother’ Implications for Your Company of Everyday Connected Devices” was formatted as a hypothetical board meeting where corporate counsel were asked to conduct investigations into employees using data and information from devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT), to include FitBits, connected cars, cell phone apps and the Amazon Echo. The privacy, security and legal implications of using IoT devices to obtain private data for use in investigations or in the defense of litigation were the focus of the presentation. The panelists gave practical tips and best practices for companies to consider in collecting, storing and reviewing the vast amounts of data and private information from devices in the IoT ecosystem.

The presentation was offered by The International Society of Primerus Law Firms. Other participating attorneys were Horace W. Green with Buchman Provine Brothers Smith LLP in Walnut Creek, Calif., Michael A. Vercher with Christian & Small LLP in Birmingham, Ala., and Brian L. Wagner with Mateer Harbert in Orlando, Fla. More than 30 members from the local ACC chapter attended, representing organizations like Hilton Grand Vacations, Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation, SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment, Darden Restaurants and Siemens Energy, Inc.

Rob, a member in Spicer Rudstrom’s Chattanooga office, is also a member of the firm’s board of directors. He is an experienced trial lawyer who focuses his practice in tort liability defense, including catastrophic injury cases, trucking and transportation, construction defect litigation, workers’ compensation and automobile liability.
